CUFF Directions

These directions will tell you how to get to CUFF events at Club 216, Rapture, and the Vinegar Hill Grill as well as the parking areas at the Omni Hotel, Vinegar Hill Shopping Center, Club 216, and Wachovia Bank.

These directions are primarily oriented towards those out of town. We have members who live in neighboring Cities and Towns such as Culpeper (40+ miles), Lake Monticello/Palmyra (15 miles) , Lovingston (30-40miles?), and Richmond (75 miles) who travel to meetings. We also get or expect visitors from reciprocal BDSM groups Groups in the DC area, Richmond, Tidewater, and North Carolina.

People coming from in town are likely to have a reasonable knowledge of the area. They should be able to interpolate from the directions below.

Some of the information below is redundant (cut and pasted, even). Since the two key intersections themselves are confusing enough, the directions below do not refer you to other directions once you have reached those two intersections.

A note about Attire

Monthly meetings are held at a private gay club on a night when they are normally closed. Munch/Socials are held at a restaurant and/or Bar and you should try not to freak out the other patrons too much or attract too much attention. Street Clothes are always appropriate at the monthly meetings and the much/socials. Jeans are ok. Black tshirt/turtleneck if fine. No leather/latex/PVC, etc required. You can dress a little more kinky if you like (a simple leather vest or skirt) at the Vinegar Hill Munches. You can probably go a little more so at the Rapture Socials (as long as it is street legal). For the monthly meeting, you can get dress very kinky (you could probably get away with, say, a leather corset and nothing else if you _really_ wanted to) but you probably want a coat or something until you are inside if you are really outrageous. If you, say, wear leather collars and wrist bands all the time, you should not need to dress down for any of these events. If you don't normally dress that way you might want to attend an event or two to see what the natives do before you dress up to quite that degree.

MAPS

I recommend you print the map out along with these directions (or the relevant portion(s) thereof.

Charlottesville Driving

The road layout in Charlottesville is, well, perverse. I think it had to do with topography. You have all these curvy roads. People started driving in straight lines by jumping from a segment of one curvey road onto another segment of another curvey road. Eventually the straightend those intersections out. But you end up with some weird streets that have lots of names (and sometimes the side streets have the same name as the one you are on). Three of the major streets are The cuff monthly meetings and munch/socials are located nears intersections of these streets with the identity crisis.

About the Downtown Mall

A portion of main street was closed to vehicle traffic and repaved with bricks to make a pedestian mall.

Near the west end of the mall are two wierd intersections which are described in the two sections below which involve the three streets with an identity crisis mentioned above. These two intersections are landmarks for all of the destinations. The Omni Hotel and Vineger Hill Grill are basically between these two intersections. Club 216 is east of the statue intersection and Rapture (and wachovia parking) is east of the other. Printing out the map to look at while you read the directions will make it much easier to figure out.

About the Lewis and Clark Statue Intersection

You will probably pass through this intersection or come very close to it to get to CUFF events and I use it as a landmark.

At the intersection of Main Street (aka Univeristy Ave and Ivy Road if you were to travel west) and Ridge Street (aka 5th Street, Ridge Street, Ridge Mc Intire Road, and McIntire Road - from south to north), there is a statue of Lewis and Clark (on the south west side of the intersection). You can miss the statue if you are busy looking for things. Main street used to continue east (after a little jog to the north) from here before they built the pedestrian mall. Now, you have two streets branching off the east side of the intersection at slight angles. One is called Water Street (which runs parallel to the pedestrian mall, one block to the south) and one is called south street (it also runs parallel to the pedestrian mall but two blocks to the south).

So yes, this is a slightly confusing five spoked intersection with a traffic light. It is marked fairly well. Here is a summary of the five spokes.

The other intersection

The other key intersection is the intersection of 5th Street/Ridge Street/Ridge Mc Intire St/Mc Intire Road and Market Street/Preston/IVY road. This intersection is exactly one block north of the statue intersection. It also has a traffic light. It is mostly a simple North/South meats East/West intersection. Except that all the roads change names at the intersection.

From Tidewater Area

Drive to Richmond, keep on going. Follow Richmond Directions.

From Richmond

Take I64 West to Charlottesville (70-80 miles). Follow the "From I64 Directions".

From I64

Take the fifth street exit off of I64 and proceed north (if you are coming from Richmond, turn right; from points west turn left)

Pass through four traffic lights (Willoby Square Shopping Center, Harris Rd, Cherry Ave, and Monticello Ave).
Incidently, there are a couple gas stations (one 24 hour), a Burger King, a Waffle House (24 hour), A Hardees, and a Taco Bell clustered around the first traffic light. There is also a grocery store and a pharmacy here.

The fifth traffic light is the Lewis and Clark Statue.

From DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia

Note: Route 29 is 4 Lane all the way from washington to C'ville (except for the strip through the Manassas Battlefield park). You can make good time on 29. There are a few traffic lights along the way. Avoid exceeding the 55mph speed limit, particularly in the speed trapsd of Green and Madison Counties. I will point out the 24 hour gas/food/drink/restroom locations on the way down.

Take the beltway to I66 west. Proceed west on I66.

At Gainsville, exit onto Route 29 south. (you may pass one or more exits for 29 south before gainsville - you can take them but it is quicker to stay on I66 to gainsville). You will drive about 75 miles from gainsville.

You will pass the second intersection with Route 17. If you need food, drinks, gas, or a restroom (24 hours), stop at the Sheetz. There are a couple other gas stations just before the sheets but not as convenient southbound.

Stay on 29 south, Go around Warrenton and Culpeper.

20 miles north of charlottesville is a traffic light/town known as Ruckersville. There is food/gas here but not 24 hours. Just to the south, there is a Sheetz station (24 hours, gas, food, restroom).

About 10 miles north of C'ville, is the traffic light/town called Earlysville. There is a 24 hour texaco station there. There is a McDonald's (not 24 hour).

A few miles south of earlysville you will find yourself in the northern 'burbs of C'ville. This area of town is referred to as "29 north" (even though you may be travelling south). You will pass through lots of traffic lights. There is a 24 hour Texeco station and a Shell station.

Now proceed with the "From The 250 Bypass" directions below.

From The 250 Bypass

Take the 250 bypass EAST from Route 29. (Big Green Interstate Highway style signs mark the turn).

Turn right at McIntire Road Traffic Light (This intersection is reasonably well marked). You are now on Mc Intire Road.

Pass through one traffic light.

From Charlottesville

You can locate the destinations relative to the Lewis and Clark Statue (end of main street), the 250 bypass, The Corner or the intersection of 5th street and I64 and follow the corresponding directions. Or just head towards the downtown mall and use the handy map if you don't already know where these places are.

From "The Corner"/University

(Walking distance under 1 mile)

From 29 (Emmet street), turn EAST onto University Ave at the Best Western Cavalier Inn.

Pass "The Corner". University Ave becomes Main Street.

You will come to the statue of Lewis and Clark. (Underhoos, they ventured a lot futher off grounds than you probably have - thats why the earned a statue :-) ).

From Raleigh/Duram/Chapel Hill/Research Triangle, North Carolina

Take I85 West to Greensboro.

Follow "From Greensboro, NC" Directions below.

From Greensboro, NC

Take 29 North

Take I64 East

Take the next exit (5th Street) and turn left onto 5th Street headed north.

Follow the "From I64" Directions Above.

From Louisa (Route 20)

Take Route 20 south.

Turn Right on 250/250 bypass.

Follow "250 Bypass" directions above.

From Scottsville (Route 20)

Take route 20 north.

West on I64

Follow "From I64" directions above.

From West Virginia

This will generally get you to I64 East.

Now follow the "From I64 East" directions.

You could also take Route 17 from Winchester, VA to Route 29 and follow the "From DC" ins&tructions.

By Air

Ok, not too many people will fly in for one of our meetings. But I have had someone drive 8+ hours to play. No Idea who holds the record for longest distance traveled to a CUFF event.

Charlottesville does have a airport (CHO) which servers private planes and Commercial Airliners. There are flights to/from New York City, Washington DC, and Charlotte, NC???. Exit the airport on airport road and turn right onto 29 southboud. Follow the "From DC" directions from the airport starting at "Earlysville".

It is usually cheaper to Fly into Dulles International Airport and drive from there. Take the 28 south exit from the Airport VERY near the start of the Dulles Toll Road (no you actually don't pay a toll going to/from the airport). Pass I66. Turn right on 29 South (West) at the traffic light (might or might not be the first). Follow the "From DC directions." You could also take I66 to Gainsville and then go south on 29.

By bus or train

Amtrack serves C'ville. One or two trains a day and they frequently run an hour or two late. There is bus service.

By boat

You can't get here from there :-).

Hotels

24 hour food

Thats about it. If it is before 1PM, "Orbit Billiards" on the Corner or the Kitchen at "St. Maartens" (also on the corner) will be open. A few other bar kitchens may be open till 11PM or later. Fast food restaurants ALL shutdown somewhere between 9PM and 11PM.

24 hour gas

24 Hour Groceries, Pharmacy, etc.
